Valve Founder Gabe Newell Commissions $815 Million Deep-Sea Research Vessel

Valve founder Gabe Newell has committed approximately US$815 million (Rp14.6 trillion) to build one of the most ambitious ocean exploration projects ever conceived. The research vessel, named RV11000, is being constructed by Norwegian shipbuilder VARD for Newell’s marine research organisation, Inkfish, with the contract announced in May 2026. The ship is designed to explore the deepest and most mysterious parts of the Earth’s oceans. Measuring 162 metres in length and 28 metres in width, the RV11000 is significantly larger than Newell’s first research vessel, the RV6000, which cost around US$300 million and is scheduled to launch in 2028. The new vessel will support a wide range of scientific activities, including seabed mapping, sample collection, and the operation of remotely operated vehicles and manned submersibles capable of reaching depths of 11,000 metres. To facilitate these missions, the ship is equipped with a submarine launch system, a hangar for two manned submersibles, a 40-metre coring system for seabed sampling, and specialised lifting equipment rated for operations down to 15,000 metres. One of the RV11000’s standout features is the largest battery system ever installed on a ship, enabling up to 12 hours of silent, emission-free operation to minimise disturbance to marine life and scientific observations. The vessel also includes four active stabilisers for improved performance in high seas, along with laboratories, workshops, offices, and accommodation for up to 130 scientists and crew, most in private cabins. Stu Buckle, project lead for vessel construction and special projects at Inkfish, stated that the next-generation ship builds on a previous design to deliver greater capability, flexibility, and range for scientific research. He added that the RV11000 is a purpose-built platform intended to push the boundaries of marine research and unlock new understanding of the oceans. Delivery of the vessel is scheduled for the first quarter of 2030.
