Vale Strengthens Downstreaming and Sustainability in Morowali
Responsible growth is realised when every business achievement delivers benefits for society, the environment, and future generations. Coinciding with its 58th anniversary, PT Vale Indonesia Tbk (PT Vale) reinforced this commitment through various initiatives in Morowali, encompassing the strengthening of nickel downstream processing, environmental rehabilitation, improving healthcare quality, and investing in human resource development. Under the theme ‘Resilient and Responsible: Growing with Integrity, Leading with Responsibility’, the series of events held from 21–25 July 2026 reflected PT Vale’s 58-year journey in building a responsible mining industry, while simultaneously strengthening the development of the Indonesia Growth Project (IGP) Morowali as part of the company’s contribution to national downstreaming and sustainable development. PT Vale Indonesia Tbk President Director & CEO, Bernardus Irmanto, stated that the 58th anniversary is an important momentum for the company to reflect on its long journey in building a mining industry that not only focuses on business achievements but also creates positive impacts for society and the environment. ‘For 58 years, PT Vale has learned that true success is not only measured by operational performance or business growth, but also by how much benefit we can create for society, the environment, and future generations. Therefore, we are committed to continuing to grow with integrity, lead with responsibility, and ensure that every achievement goes hand in hand with sustainability and shared prosperity,’ said Bernardus. He added that these achievements are the result of collaboration among all stakeholders who have supported the company’s journey, particularly in the development of the IGP Morowali. ‘I would like to express my highest gratitude and appreciation to all employees and the extended family of PT Vale, the central and regional governments, communities around our operational areas, business partners, contractors, strategic working partners, community leaders, and all stakeholders who have supported PT Vale’s journey and growth to this day,’ he said. The 58th anniversary celebration on 21 July 2026 began with two important milestones reflecting PT Vale’s growth direction in Morowali, namely the inauguration of the Pevalea Dormitory as an investment in employee welfare and the achievement of nickel ore sales in the first semester of 2026 surpassing 2 million tonnes. These two achievements reflect the company’s commitment to balancing business growth with human resource development as the foundation of sustainability. Amid the acceleration of project development in Morowali, PT Vale believes that operational success can only be achieved through human resources working in a safe, healthy, and comfortable environment. The presence of the Pevalea Dormitory symbolises the company’s commitment to improving the quality of life of its employees while strengthening a productive and sustainable work culture. At the same time, the achievement of sales of more than two million tonnes of nickel ore is an important milestone reflecting the dedication and collaboration of all PT Vale personnel in supporting the company’s responsible growth. PT Vale’s commitment to creating greater added value for Indonesia was further demonstrated on 22 July 2026 with the arrival of an autoclave, the main equipment for the Sambalagi High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) Project. This momentum marks a milestone in the construction of a low-carbon nickel processing facility, which is part of the IGP Morowali and a National Strategic Project. More than just the arrival of industrial equipment, the autoclave represents the transformation of Indonesia’s mining industry towards downstreaming that generates higher added value. With HPAL technology, limonite ore, which previously had limited economic value, can be processed into Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), a key raw material for electric vehicle battery manufacturing. Through this project, developed in collaboration with GEM Co., Ltd. and EcoPro, PT Vale not only strengthens the global electric vehicle supply chain but also contributes to Indonesia’s energy transition and low-carbon economy agenda. The commitment to sustainability was also realised through environmental reclamation and tree planting activities along the Bahopenila River, Onepute Jaya Village, on 24 July 2026. A total of 300 tree seedlings were planted along the riverbanks as part of efforts to rehabilitate watershed areas, mitigate erosion and flood risks, and protect local ecosystems. Through this activity, PT Vale affirmed that environmental restoration is an integral part of responsible mining practices. On the same day, PT Vale also organised a blood donation drive in collaboration with the Morowali Regency Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) and Bahomotefe Community Health Centre to support regional blood stock availability, fostering solidarity and social awareness within the company and the community. The activity successfully collected 77 blood bags, which were subsequently distributed through the Morowali Regency PMI to help meet the blood needs of communities in Morowali Regency and surrounding areas. The series of 58th anniversary events in Morowali concluded on 25 July 2026 with two programmes focused on improving the quality of human resources. The first programme was the closing of the Service Excellence Improvement Programme for Bahomotefe Community Health Centre healthcare workers.
