Utut surprises Timman in Biel

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's Utut Adianto played one of his best games to stop Jan Timman at the 34th move at the Biel Master Invitation chess tournament in Switzerland, Tuesday evening.

Utut, despite the disadvantage of playing black, wore out Timman's patience to carve out his first career victory over the former world champion contender.

The victory put the Indonesian on the second row of the 14- field tournament with 2.5 match points, along with grandmaster Tkachiiev and grandmaster Kindermann.

It was clear that the tense game drew the attention of chess pundits who turned out to watch the fourth round of the week-long event. The tournament's commentator, grandmaster Vlastimil Hort, presented the Utut-Timman game on the analyzing board in front of chess fans.

Boris Gelfand remained atop of the standings with 3 MP after a draw with grandmaster Campora. (amd)
