USU: Suyudi's Programme to Increase Public Participation in Maintaining Public Order
Medan (ANTARA) - Agus Suriadi, an academic from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at the University of North Sumatra (USU), stated that Police Commissioner General Suyudi Ario Bayu’s programme regarding National Police services can increase public participation in maintaining public order and security in the region.
“The priority programme regarding National Police services, which aims to meet citizens’ needs in a faster, more transparent, and responsive manner to social impacts, is quite good,” Agus said in Medan on Thursday.
He noted that the public will have greater trust in the police institution because they will participate more actively in maintaining security and order.
Furthermore, he stated that the implementation of this programme in North Sumatra needs to be adjusted to the characteristics and needs of each specific area. This is because, according to him, security issues in urban areas, coastal regions, and remote areas present different challenges; therefore, service approaches cannot be standardised.
“The approach must be based on community needs. Regions with different problems certainly require different service patterns,” he added.
Agus also assessed that the digitalisation of police services could serve as an instrument to expand public access. The use of applications and digital channels allows the public to obtain information, submit complaints, and monitor service processes without having to physically visit a police station.
However, he warned that digital transformation must not create new disparities for citizens who lack access to or the ability to use technology. Therefore, face-to-face services must be maintained, particularly for communities in areas with limited internet access and digital literacy.
Previously, the sole candidate for Chief of the National Police, Police Commissioner General Suyudi Ario Seto, presented six priority programmes for National Police transformation during his fit and proper test at Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI). Among these, he stated that police services must shift from merely fulfilling procedures to meeting the needs of citizens in a way that is easily accessible, fast, integrated, transparent, measurable, and inclusive.
