USU Students Introduced to Underground Mining Industry

Medan (ANTARA) - Around 160 students from the University of North Sumatra (USU) were given the opportunity to gain deeper insights into the world of underground mining through the ‘Dairi Prima Mineral (DPM) Goes to Campus’ event, held at the USU Faculty of Engineering Hall in Medan on Wednesday.

The Secretary of the USU Mining Engineering Study Programme, Edi Yasa Ardiansyah, stated that the event, themed “Understanding Responsible Underground Mining”, is highly relevant for students, particularly as the USU Mining Engineering Study Programme is set to launch in 2026.

“This is extremely important. They must understand the reality of mining, the activities that must be undertaken, and the impacts of those activities,” said Edi.

According to him, students also need to understand that the mining industry is not solely related to mining engineering. Various other fields, including civil engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, and logistics, all play vital roles.

Edi noted that the mining industry is characterised by high risk, high technology, and high investment. Therefore, students need to be equipped with an understanding of risk management alongside the appropriate use of technology.
