USU Rector: Strategic policy direction focuses on five main pillars

Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has established its strategic policy direction for the 2026–2031 period, focusing on five main pillars in an effort to accelerate quality improvement and broaden its contribution to providing solutions for national development. USU Rector Prof Muryanto Amin, during the inauguration of five USU Professors in Medan on Tuesday, stated that the first pillar is strengthening adaptive governance, which serves as the foundation for a management system responsive to change. The development of a Tri Dharma-driven university places education, research, and community service as the primary drivers of all institutional activities. Furthermore, digitalisation and the development of a smart campus are directed at enhancing efficiency, transparency, and the quality of academic services. Strengthening enterprise and endowment funds is a strategic step towards financial independence. Meanwhile, internationalisation and strengthening global branding are carried out to expand networks and enhance USU’s reputation globally. “These five pillars are designed to be interconnected and cannot be implemented separately. The Tri Dharma must be the core engine driving all campus activities,” he said. “As a way to face global and national challenges, we need to know USU’s position honestly and comparatively,” he added. He noted that various international rankings and Scopus-indexed publication achievements provide an overview of USU’s position within the national and global higher education landscape. However, when compared to several other universities in Indonesia, this position indicates that USU is still in a phase of strengthening and consolidation. Therefore, rankings should be interpreted as an evaluation tool to accelerate quality improvement and expand USU’s contribution to providing solutions for national development.
