USU Rector: Lecturers Must Adapt to Technological Developments

The Rector of the University of North Sumatra (USU), Prof Muryanto Amin, has asserted that lecturers and academic leaders within the higher education institution are required to be able to adapt to continuously developing technology. “The world is facing very rapid changes, therefore lecturers and academic leaders must be able to adapt to technological developments,” he said whilst inaugurating several chairpersons and secretaries of study programmes within USU for the 2026-2031 period at the USU Student Hall, Medan, on Wednesday. He stated that the use of technology is no longer a choice, but a necessity in supporting the learning process in higher education. Technology must be utilised optimally to create an effective, innovative teaching and learning process that is relevant to the needs of the times. “I ask all lecturers, technological developments have changed many aspects of life, including the world of education. Therefore, we must be able to utilise technology as part of the learning process so that the quality of education continues to improve,” he said. On that occasion, he also invited all lecturers to continue improving their personal capacity and never stop learning. Adaptation to the times is one of the keys for higher education to produce graduates with high competitiveness. He hopes that every lecturer can build good communication with students so that the teaching and learning process not only focuses on delivering material, but is also able to encourage creativity, critical thinking, and the development of student competencies. “We must understand what the needs of current students are. Learning methods must be continuously adjusted to the times so that the learning process in class becomes more engaging, interactive, and provides a meaningful learning experience,” he said. He also reminded the newly inaugurated officials to build a collaborative work culture in carrying out their duties. The progress of a study programme or the university, he said, cannot be achieved individually, but rather through solid cooperation between leaders, lecturers, education staff, students, and various stakeholders. He also hopes the newly inaugurated officials will be able to deliver innovation, strengthen academic governance, improve the quality of education, and expand cooperation networks to support the achievement of university targets at national and international levels. The inauguration was a momentum to strengthen USU’s commitment to building an academic environment that is inclusive, adaptive to technological developments, and upholds the spirit of collaboration. The diversity of backgrounds of the inaugurated officials also reflects that unity in diversity is an important asset in advancing the university.
