USU Rector: Communication Skills Key to Success

The Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, stated that the ability to communicate is a primary key to achieving success, both in building a career and in expressing ideas so they can be accepted by others.

Speaking at the official opening of the university’s Campus Life Introduction (PKKMB) event for new students in Medan, he advised that even intelligent individuals must be able to convey their intelligence in a simple manner. ‘If you are smart but cannot express your intelligence to others, that intelligence will only belong to yourself,’ he said.

He encouraged the 8,360 new students of the 2026 cohort to continuously train their communication skills in a polite manner without hurting others, including being courteous when using social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and others. ‘If you have good IQ, good morals, and good communication skills, that is a combination that leads to a perfect career achievement,’ he added.

The rector also mentioned that USU will soon integrate sports with intellect through a sport science programme, linking physical activity with reasoning. He urged students to make the most of their time on campus and not waste the golden opportunity to study. ‘Do not leave a single second of this golden opportunity to carve out all the achievements you can during your studies,’ he said.

Over the coming days, new students will be given the opportunity to become more familiar with various aspects of campus life, from facilities and student activities to academic and non-academic services. ‘We hope students will actively engage in every session provided. Do not hesitate to ask questions if anything is unclear and try to build good relationships with fellow students and lecturers, as this is a very valuable moment to start a new chapter in your lives,’ he concluded.
