USS Tripoli Monitored in Strait of Malacca, Carrying Thousands of Marines Towards Middle East
A United States Navy warship carrying thousands of Marine personnel has been reported transiting the Strait of Malacca towards the Middle East region. Based on maritime tracking data from Tuesday, 17 March, the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli was observed approaching Singapore after passing through the south-western waters of the South China Sea.
USS Tripoli is the lead ship in an amphibious ready group. Although US Navy warships often disable their automatic identification system (AIS) transponders for operational security, this vessel activated its tracking system whilst passing through heavily congested maritime traffic areas such as Singapore waters to ensure operational safety.
Three officials familiar with the operation disclosed that USS Tripoli is carrying forces from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) based in Okinawa, Japan. This unit is a rapid reaction force comprising approximately 2,200 elite personnel. The deployment follows a direct order from the Pentagon to dispatch the unit to the Middle East region.
To date, US authorities have not provided specific details regarding the final placement location or missions to be undertaken by the unit. Structurally, an MEU comprises four main elements: command, ground combat, air combat, and logistics. The unit is recognised as a specialist in evacuation operations, amphibious assaults from ship to shore, and special operations.
Data from marinetraffic.com indicates an “unidentified US warship” departed Okinawa on 11 March. The vessel transited the South China Sea at approximately 22 knots before reaching waters near Singapore on Tuesday morning.
USS Tripoli boasts an impressive profile. With a length of nearly 260 metres and a displacement of 45,000 tonnes, the ship essentially functions as a small aircraft carrier. Tripoli is designed to transport stealth fighter jets F-35B, vertical takeoff aircraft MV-22 Osprey, and various landing craft for troop mobilisation ashore.
In its standard configuration, USS Tripoli is typically accompanied by amphibious transport dock ships USS New Orleans and USS San Diego. However, the presence of these two support vessels has not been confirmed through maritime tracking websites at the same time. The 7th Fleet and 5th Fleet of the US Navy have thus far issued no official comment regarding the fleet’s movement.
