USIS closes Surabaya office

SURABAYA: The United States Information Service (USIS) in Surabaya will closedown on April 30, and all services will be transferred and handled by the USIS office in Jakarta.

The Surabaya office will be closed due to Washington's worldwide effort to streamline operations.

In a statement, the press attache of the American Embassy in Jakarta, Craig J. Stromme, said yesterday the decision was made only after reviewing many other alternatives.

"USIS Jakarta will make every effort to maintain the same friendly and cooperative relationship with those who have worked with USIS Surabaya that has existed for so many years," he said.

The U.S. Consulate in Surabaya, however, will continue to function and provide regular services. (mds)
