Using the law as a shield

From Rakyat Merdeka

What a mess our judicial system is! Unless the system is reformed, don't expect that the law can be enforced.

The governor of Bank Indonesia, Syahril Sabirin, was convicted by the district court and then acquitted by the higher court that heard his appeal. Akbar Tanjung has also been convicted by the district court. It remains to be seen whether, like Sabirin, he will also be acquitted.

Regarding Akbar's case, the Golkar Party says that although Akbar has been convicted he is still presumed to be not guilty because the verdict of the district court judges does not yet have permanent legal force.

The law must always be coupled with morality. The law alone, without morality, will make this country a place for zombie-like people. Akbar must not use the law as his shield. He and his colleagues in Golkar must prioritize the interests of the people and the nation.
