Use of supplements could help maintain the body's immune system
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Research results show benefits of using supplement products in helping to maintain the body’s immune system, including in patients with chronic illnesses and in people with obesity. Lead researcher of HDI Propoelix, Dr. H. Harli Amir Mahmudji, Sp.PD-KEMD, told a press conference in Central Jakarta on Saturday (7/3) that the findings relate to the immune system of diabetes patients and people with obesity.
“Among chronic patients, the immune system remains balanced and the risk of inflammation does not increase,” Harli said about the results of the 30-day study conducted on office workers aged 25-60, some of whom have obesity and diabetes.
Laboratory results showed that using the supplement made acute-phase white blood cells more ready to respond to mild infection, while platelet and neutrophil profiles stayed stable, and inflammatory indicators did not rise.
According to Harli, this is important for diabetes patients or people with obesity who are at risk of complications.
However, he emphasised that the use of the supplement can only help maintain the immune system, not replace standard medical treatment.
“This is as a supplement, not a replacement for medical therapy,” he said.
“The study duration was only 30 days and participants were limited to adult office workers. Long-term effects and use in other groups, such as pregnant women or autoimmune patients, still require further research,” he explained.
The study results, which provide an initial picture of immune system modulation in patients with metabolic disorders, could form the basis for further studies to assess its effectiveness and safety in a broader population, he said.
Researchers emphasised the importance of additional studies with larger participant numbers and longer durations to obtain more comprehensive results.
