Use of Jamsostek funds

Use of Jamsostek funds

From Kompas

There is much news doing the rounds on the use of Jamsostek
(state-owned social security company) funds: the money deposited
at BTN has been used for financing the repatriation of women
workers abroad and lately it has been used to "bribe" the DPR
(House of Representatives) to smooth the way to the adoption of a
labor law. I deplore the policy of the decision makers on the
Jamsostek board.

The huge amount of funds did not fall from the sky but was the
result of collection of a percentage of the monthly wages of
millions of workers. It should be known that what PT Jamsostek
has done so far by reducing the workers' income is not
accompanied by good service to workers.

I work in a forestry company. One of its activities takes
place in the forest where health claims related to diseases like
malaria and indigestion due to unhealthy water are not accepted
by PT Jamsostek.

Claims on death are paid at Rp 1.2 million by PT Jamsostek,
those for accidental death Rp 5.4 million. These amounts are too
small relative to present conditions.

The annual report on the balance of old-age allowances has not
been published. The company's computer system has not been
integrated so there is no on-line connection among branch
offices, making it difficult for workers being transferred to get
a relevant statement.

The company where I work pays at least Rp 130 million a month
to PT Jamsostek. It is only fitting that the funds coming from
workers' pay be used for workers' welfare, which is in accordance
with the objective of the establishment of PT Jamsostek.

I appeal to PT Jamsostek's board of directors, or its decision
and policy makers, prior to taking steps, to consider the
internal policies on the smooth running of its management, so
that the principle of democracy, from worker to worker, can be
duly implemented and the trust invested in PT Jamsostek is not
misused.
