US$2.6m demanded to free captives

MALAYSIA: Armed raiders who kidnapped six foreign workers from a Malaysian resort on Borneo island in early October have demanded 10 million ringgit (US$2.6 million) in exchange for their captives' release, a junior minister said on Monday.

Chor Chee Heung, deputy home minister, said Malaysia would not pay the ransom.

Chor said as quoted by Bernama news agency that the police were investigating the person who demanded the ransom money.

However, Malaysia will not pay the ransom demanded by kidnappers, Chor said.

Chor said the Oct. 5 raid on the Borneo Paradise Resort was a crime and its perpetrators would be treated as criminals. -- Agencies
