Washington (ANTARA) - White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the United States will act in accordance with the law following US President Donald Trump’s threats to target Iran’s energy infrastructure and desalination plants.

“The US armed forces will always act within legal boundaries,” Leavitt said during a press conference on Monday (30/3).

Leavitt made this statement in response to questions about why Trump was threatening actions that could potentially constitute war crimes. However, Leavitt added that Trump intends to continue pursuing the full objectives of military operations in the Middle East “relentlessly”.

Previously, Trump stated that the United States would “blow up and completely obliterate” all power plants, oil wells, Kharg Island, and desalination plants in Iran if a peace agreement is not reached and the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened.

Escalating tensions around Iran have caused a de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which is the main route for shipping oil and liquefied natural gas from Persian Gulf countries to global markets. The blockade in the Strait of Hormuz also affects export activities and oil production in the region.
