Jakarta (ANTARA) - US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has welcomed the strengthening of defence cooperation with Indonesia achieved through the Major Defence Cooperation Partnership (MDCP) between the two countries.

“This partnership reflects the strength and potential of our security relationship, strengthens regional deterrence, and advances our shared commitment to peace through strength,” said Hegseth when receiving Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin at the US Department of Defence headquarters, the Pentagon, on Monday (13/4).

In a written statement from the US Department of Defence, as monitored in Jakarta on Tuesday, Hegseth stated that defence and security cooperation between the US and Indonesia continues to develop rapidly.

“Your visit (Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin) demonstrates the importance of our continuously developing, active, and growing security relationship between the US Department of Defence and Indonesia,” said Hegseth.

In addition to the achievement of the MDCP with Indonesia, Hegseth also appreciated Indonesia’s assistance in repatriating the remains of fallen US soldiers.

“I appreciate your ongoing support in helping the United States locate, recover, and protect the remains of our soldiers who fought alongside Indonesia during World War II,” said Hegseth to Sjamsoeddin.

It was explained that the MDCP has three main pillars implemented based on principles of mutual respect and national sovereignty.

The three pillars are military modernisation and capacity building, professional military training and education, and exercises and operational cooperation.

Hegseth and Sjamsoeddin both described the defence cooperation agreed upon by the US and Indonesia this time as a sign of the beginning of a new mission for both countries.

“This is the beginning of a new chapter and a joint mission for our great nations,” said Hegseth.
