Anthropic has once again stirred controversy after clashing with the United States government. This time, the company’s newly announced Mythos model is seen as potentially bringing about a major catastrophe.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell have issued warnings to US bank CEOs, stating that there is a new cyber attack threat posed by Anthropic’s latest AI model.

Last week, Anthropic stated that it is in ongoing discussions with US government officials regarding the offensive and defensive cyber capabilities of the model. Anthropic has decided to delay the widespread release of Mythos, citing concerns that the model could reveal previously unknown cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

A third source close to the matter reiterated Anthropic’s efforts, stating that the company has proactively briefed senior US government officials and key industry stakeholders on Mythos’s capabilities prior to its launch.

Most recently, financial regulators in the UK have held emergency discussions with government cybersecurity agencies and major banks. The discussions addressed potential risks arising from the existence of Mythos, as cited from Reuters on Monday (13/4/2026), based on a Financial Times report.

Officials from the Bank of England, Financial Conduct Authority, and Treasury Department are discussing with the National Cyber Security Centre to examine potential vulnerabilities in critical IT systems highlighted by Anthropic’s latest AI model, according to the FT, citing two people informed about the talks.

Anthropic did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment. The Bank of England, FCA, and NCSC declined to comment. The UK Treasury could not be immediately reached for comment.

Representatives from major UK banks, insurance companies, and exchanges are expected to be briefed on the cybersecurity risks posed by the Mythos model, in meetings with regulators over the next two weeks, the newspaper said.

Reuters could not immediately verify the details of the report.

Previously, Anthropic caused a stir by refusing to allow its AI tools to be used by the US government to create autonomous weapons and spy on US citizens. Anthropic itself is a supplier of advanced weapons to the US military with substantial contracts.

Anthropic’s refusal enraged Trump, leading to a ban on the use of Anthropic’s AI tools in all government agencies. Anthropic was even placed on a ‘supply chain risk’ blacklist, though a court later deemed the designation invalid.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Anthropic’s AI tools were used by the US military in the war against Iran on 28 February 2026. The AI tools were used, among other things, for war simulations, target targeting, and intelligence tools.
