US Warns Citizens to Avoid Middle East as Conflict Could Escalate Rapidly
The United States government has increased security warnings for its citizens amidst the deteriorating situation in the Middle East. Washington is requesting American citizens currently outside the region to seriously consider their travel plans to or through the Middle East, as the conflict is assessed to be capable of escalating unexpectedly.
The warning follows the Yemeni Houthi group increasing attacks against Saudi Arabia, including claims of missile and drone strikes targeting Riyadh. Tensions have expanded as the war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has spread to several new points within the region.
The US Department of State stated that the security environment in the Middle East remains complex, with the possibility of unpredictable escalations. American citizens already in the region have been asked to increase vigilance and prepare for potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.
“American citizens outside the Middle East should seriously reconsider travel to and through the region,” stated the US Department of State warning, as reported by The Independent.
New security alerts have also been issued by 11 US embassies within the region. Countries affected by these warnings include key international flight destinations such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Jordan.
Riyadh Becomes a New Alarm
The change in alert levels occurred after Saudi-Houthi tensions reached the kingdom’s capital. Reuters reported that the Houthis claimed to have attacked several “sensitive” locations in Riyadh with missiles and drones on Saturday (19/09/2026). These claims emerged hours after large flames and thick black smoke were seen in an area near King Khalid International Airport.
However, a direct link between the fire and the Houthi attacks has not been independently confirmed. The Houthis did not specify their exact targets in Riyadh, while the Saudi government did not immediately provide an explanation regarding the cause of the fire or damage near the airport.
The Saudi-led military coalition stated that its air defences intercepted missiles fired by the Houthis towards Riyadh. The coalition also claimed to have thwarted other attacks against Bish, Farasan, Taif, and Yanbu.
These attacks represent a significant development because, according to Reuters, it is the first claimed Houthi attack on Riyadh since the latest round of escalation began in July. Previously, the Houthis have repeatedly attacked Saudi cities, energy infrastructure, and vessels in the Red Sea.
Airports and Airspace Also Threatened
For Washington, the threat is not limited to the strike locations. The conflict moving closer to city centres, airports, energy infrastructure, and major shipping lanes has a direct impact on international travel.
The Independent reported that US citizens in the region have been asked to prepare for potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and other travel disruptions. Those continuing to travel are also advised to continuously monitor information from airports and airlines.
Saudi Arabia is currently at Level 3—Reconsider Travel—within the US Department of State’s warning system. The US government cited armed conflict, the risk of drone and missile attacks against American interests, terrorism, and several other risks as reasons for the increased vigilance.
The Independent noted that Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen are in the red “do not travel” category. Meanwhile, Bahrain, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates are in the category requesting travellers to reconsider their journeys.
Consequently, Washington’s warning does not mean the entire Middle East is closed to US citizens. Alert levels vary by country, but the US government is regionally requesting that citizens not yet in the area reconsider their travel plans.
