US Visa Interviews Temporarily Suspended, Here's Trump's Reason
President Donald Trump has suspended a number of US visa interview appointments for applicants from various countries. The US State Department on Tuesday (25/8) confirmed that it is running a global training programme for consular officers at US embassies and consulates in various countries. Visa service schedule adjustments were made to accommodate the training.
A State Department spokesperson said the training is intended to help consular officers conduct more thorough and consistent screening of visa applicants. Officers will also be trained to identify applicants deemed potentially dependent on public benefits in the US.
The State Department has not provided details on the training material or duration. However, the impact has already been felt by a number of immigrant visa applicants who had previously obtained interview appointments at US embassies and consulates.
According to a Financial Times report, these applicants received notification via email that their interview schedules had been postponed. They will receive information about new schedules at a later date.
The interview schedule delays come as the Trump administration tightens immigration policy, both against illegal immigration and legal immigration pathways. Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump has pushed aggressive deportation policies and tightened the process for issuing and revoking visas and green cards. His administration has also faced criticism for using various considerations in assessing a person’s eligibility to enter or remain in the US, including political activity and involvement in pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
The US government has stated that these policies are necessary to enhance national security and domestic security. The policies have triggered a series of lawsuits. On Friday, a US federal judge struck down the Trump administration’s policy suspending the issuance of immigrant visas for applicants from 75 countries. The judge ruled that the policy exceeded the legal authority of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The Trump administration’s immigration tightening measures have also drawn condemnation from various human rights organisations. They argue that the policies are potentially discriminatory and could threaten freedom of expression and the right to due process. Several human rights groups have also warned that increasingly strict immigration policies could create insecurity for minority groups in the US. Concerns particularly relate to the possibility of increased racial profiling, namely the practice of targeting individuals based on race or ethnic characteristics.
