US Urges Oman to Take a Stance on Middle East Conflict
Moscow (ANTARA) - The United States is urging Oman to take a clear stance regarding the conflict in the Middle East region and to sever diplomatic relations with Iran, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, citing several American and Arab officials. On Thursday (28/5), US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned Oman that Washington would actively pursue any party facilitating the collection of Iranian transit fees through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has threatened to ‘blow up’ Oman should the nation attempt to seize control of the strait. The report, published on Monday (1/6), notes that Oman does not hold as significant a role in oil production as other US allies in the region, nor does it host any US military bases. Consequently, Oman is being treated differently compared to other American allies in the Middle East. However, the report suggests that by siding with the US, Oman risks facing attacks from Iran, similar to what its neighbouring countries have experienced during the ongoing conflict. At the same time, the report mentions that Washington currently has no plans to attack Oman in the near future due to its support for Iran, despite previous threats from US officials. Omani officials are reportedly surprised by the sudden emergence of a hostile stance from the United States and are currently preparing a response to the situation.
