US Turns Spotlight on Indonesian Ports for Modernisation Drive
The United States is stepping up efforts to expand cooperation with Indonesia in the maritime sector through a port modernisation programme. The United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) is bringing a delegation of Indonesian port and maritime sector leaders to the US to explore investment opportunities whilst introducing a range of the latest technologies.
According to an official statement from the US Embassy in Jakarta on Tuesday (4 July 2026), the programme, running from 1 to 14 August, involves 18 delegates comprising government officials and industry players. They are scheduled to visit Washington DC, Houston (Texas), and Los Angeles (California).
During the visit, the delegation will meet with various US companies and witness demonstrations of technologies on offer to improve the efficiency of Indonesian ports. The technologies cover infrastructure modernisation, supply chain digitalisation, improved maritime logistics, integration of ports with industrial zones, and cybersecurity solutions.
The Indonesian delegation will also observe operations at the ports of Baltimore, Houston, and Los Angeles firsthand, to see the implementation of these technologies and hold discussions with local port authorities.
As part of the agenda, USTDA will hold a business matchmaking session in Washington on 4 August. The forum will bring US companies together with the Indonesian delegation to discuss commercial opportunities in the port sector and present various technology solutions that could be applied in Indonesia.
USTDA stated that the need to modernise Indonesia’s ports is becoming increasingly urgent. This is important as rising trade volumes put pressure on national logistics infrastructure capacity.
“Indonesia is currently seeking various technologies to improve port operational efficiency, strengthen supply chain resilience, and transform the maritime sector into a globally integrated logistics hub,” the US statement read.
“Through this programme, the United States believes its companies are well positioned to provide a range of modernisation solutions, from automation and digitalisation to cybersecurity systems that support the port operations of the future,” it added.
