U.S. troops return to Subic for rest
SUBIC, Philippines (AFP): Two years after being expelled,
American troops will be returning to this former naval base and
the neighboring city of Olongapo for rest and recreation,
officials said yesterday.
Carlito Baloy, head of the Subic Bay Resorts Association
(SUBRA), said the U.S. Embassy had made arrangements for some of
the 5,000 US troops from four U.S. ships to be bused to Subic and
to Angeles, another city near the former U.S. Clark Airbase.
The USS Bellauwood, USS Germantown, USS San Bernardino and the
merchant ship Higgins will be berthed in Manila, and the troops
will arrive for a five-day stay on Tuesday.
Olongapo police director Superintendent Eduardo Orpilla said
that a security set-up would be put in place during the five-day
stay to prevent any incidents.
