Washington (ANTARA) - US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a filing to the International Trade Court on Friday, 6 March, that it is pursuing the development of a tariff refunds system, with a plan to implement it within 45 days. The move follows the US Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the sweeping global tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump in a key ruling on 20 February, saying he exceeded his presidential authority in imposing tariffs last year without Congressional approval. CBP said in the filing that as of Wednesday the agency had collected about $166 billion in tariffs from more than 330,000 importers in more than 53 million entries. The agency, which uses the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) to record imports, said it was working to add new functionality to that system to issue tariff refunds efficiently. “CBP is taking every possible step to have this new ACE functionality ready for use in 45 days,” it added. Shortly after the Supreme Court struck down those tariffs, Trump replaced them with a comprehensive tariff regime under a different authority.
