US to Require Deposits of Up to Rp4.46 Billion for Prospective Immigrant Visas

The administration of United States President Donald Trump plans to collect a security deposit of US$100,000–250,000 (approximately Rp1.78–4.46 billion) from certain prospective immigrants seeking a US visa.

According to a Washington Free Beacon report on Wednesday, citing US State Department sources, the measure is part of a pilot programme.

The requirement is intended to ensure visa applicants have sufficient funds to support themselves while in the US and do not rely on assistance paid for by American taxpayers.

The programme will take effect in August and will be implemented together with the US Department of Homeland Security.

In its first phase, the requirement applies to certain prospective immigrants from the Dominican Republic before possibly being expanded to visa applicants from other countries.

Upon being sworn in as the 47th US President in early 2025, Donald Trump pledged to stop illegal migration and carry out mass deportations.

He also declared a national emergency to address the crisis at the US border.
