US to Form Independent Oversight Body for AI Safety Evaluation

The administration of US President Donald Trump is exploring the possibility of establishing an independent regulatory body to review the safety of artificial intelligence (AI) models, according to a Bloomberg report. The plan was drawn up after Silicon Valley executives expressed dissatisfaction with a number of abrupt measures recently taken by the US to slow the adoption of advanced AI systems. According to several sources, the independent watchdog, which would be similar to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), would fall under the auspices of the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The plan, which is being developed jointly with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, is currently under review by White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. A source said Trump has not yet reviewed the plan. The new mechanism would allow representatives from the industry to play a more significant role in the joint development of AI safety standards. At the end of last June, AI developer Anthropic announced that the US government had restored access to its most powerful AI model, Mythos 5, for several US security agencies. The US had previously blocked access to the company’s Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models for foreign governments and citizens on national security grounds. Artificial intelligence is a key element in President Donald Trump’s agenda to maintain the US’s leading position in technology, ensure economic competitiveness, and strengthen national security.
