US Tanker Aircraft Crashes in Iraq: Centcom Statement and Iran Attack Claims
A United States Air Force KC-135 tanker aircraft was reported to have crashed in western Iraq on Thursday, 12 March local time. The incident has sparked sharp disagreement between the United States Central Command (Centcom) and Iran regarding the cause of the crash.
Centcom confirmed in its official statement the loss of one tanker aircraft in an incident involving a second tanker. According to Centcom, the incident occurred in airspace classified as secure during Operation Epic Fury. βOne aircraft crashed in western Iraq, whilst a second aircraft successfully made an emergency landing,β Centcom stated. Although the aircraft was conducting a mission related to Iran operations, Centcom maintained that the incident was purely accidental and was not caused by enemy fire or friendly fire. Search and rescue efforts continue at the incident site.
In contrast, Iran has presented a conflicting account. Khatam al-Anbia headquarters claims that the aircraft was brought down as a direct result of an attack by Iraqi resistance air defence systems. A spokesman for Khatam al-Anbia asserted that the US tanker was struck in western Iraq and crashed, and stated that all personnel aboard the aircraft were killed in the incident.
As of the time of reporting, the situation on the ground remains under close observation. The conflicting claims have heightened tensions in the Middle East amid escalating military activity on both sides. No independent evidence has yet confirmed definitively whether the KC-135 crash resulted from technical failure or military action.
