US Supreme Court Strikes Down Several Trump Tariff Policies
Washington (ANTARA) - The US Supreme Court’s decision to strike down several of President Donald Trump’s global tariff policies has dealt a serious blow to the American people whilst stripping Trump of significant influence, said US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
“Today is a defeat for the American people because by removing President Trump’s instant leverage in exercising authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), the American people have suffered a significant setback,” Bessent said on Fox News, as quoted by the Ria Novosti news agency.
On Friday (20 February local time), the US Supreme Court, in a 6-3 vote, ruled that President Donald Trump does not have the authority to impose global tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
Trump called the Supreme Court ruling “deeply disappointing” and accused the court of having been influenced by “foreign interests.”
He subsequently affirmed that all national security tariffs remain in effect, and that the Supreme Court ruling specifically concerns only the use of IEEPA-based tariffs.
