Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — The tariff policy of President Donald Trump’s administration continues to create uncertainty for global trade. This stems from a decision by the United States Supreme Court on 20 February 2026, which nullified the US reciprocal tariff policy.

The dispute over US reciprocal tariffs escalated after Trump responded to the court’s decision by implementing a new global tariff of 15%. In response, Mari Elka Pangestu, Vice Chair of the National Economic Council (DEN), outlined several implications for Indonesia.

Pangestu stated that this situation does not invalidate the Indonesia-US trade agreement, but the 19% tariff rate in that agreement now lacks a legal basis. Therefore, a process will ensue to discuss changes to the agreement, though Indonesia’s position will be stronger than countries that have not yet signed the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART).

Regarding Indonesian imports from the US, Pangestu assured that Indonesia need not worry about food security, as the imported products are items that Indonesia cannot produce in significant quantities and at competitive prices, such as wheat and soya. She emphasised that these are imported at commercial rates.

The implications of the US-Indonesia trade agreement were discussed in detail in an interview between Syarifah Rahma and Mari Elka Pangestu, Vice Chair of the National Economic Council, on Squawk Box CNBC Indonesia (Friday, 27 February 2026).
