US Supreme Court Cancels Trump Trade Tariffs; Indonesian Business Leaders Respond
Jakarta – The chair of Indonesia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Anindya Bakrie, has responded to the US Supreme Court’s decision to cancel trade tariff policies implemented by President Donald Trump.
According to Bakrie, the policy outcome was largely anticipated and does not pose significant concerns for bilateral trade between the two nations. “The Supreme Court’s decision is certainly something that could have been expected to occur, but it does not make things worse for Indonesia, as everything is relative in nature,” Bakrie stated in the Menteng area of Jakarta on Friday, 27 February 2026.
The Indonesian government has previously assured that the Indonesia-US agreement will continue to progress following the Supreme Court ruling, meaning existing agreements from negotiations remain valid, including tariff exemptions for Indonesia’s key commodities.
Bakrie observed that the United States will need to undertake domestic work to establish regulations following the court’s decision. Nevertheless, he contends that Indonesia has secured a favourable outcome from its negotiations, and potentially a better arrangement than several other countries that have previously concluded agreements with the United States.
“Indonesia will not fare worse than previously, and we have not received worse terms than other nations, though we have not secured better terms either,” he noted.
According to Bakrie, the agreement provides Indonesia with 0% tariff access for 1,819 specific products in the US market. This is advantageous as Indonesian exporters will face minimal tariffs on products such as cocoa, coffee, and palm oil.
Additionally, under the agreement with the United States, Indonesia has obtained 0% tariffs on commonly consumed products including soybean, wheat, and cotton.
“I am confident that trade with America will yield positive results, and there are many goods imported from America such as soybean, cotton, and wheat that we genuinely need. The important factor for us is affordability. With 0% tariffs, it means cheaper prices for our consumers. From my perspective, that is how it works,” Bakrie concluded.
