US Suddenly Moves Aircraft Carrier Away from Near Indonesia, What's Going On?
The redeployment of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington from the Indo-Pacific to the Middle East is seen as potentially creating a security gap for the United States, particularly amid the growing threat from China.
Former Carrier Strike Group 5 commander Rear Admiral (Ret.) Mark Montgomery warned that the deployment could become a ‘national security risk’ for the US. In his view, the move will cause Washington to lose part of its naval strength in Asia over the long term.
‘This is a national security risk because it sends a weak deterrence message to China and fails to provide security assurance for America’s allies and partners in the Pacific,’ Montgomery said, as quoted by Newsweek on Friday (21/8/2026).
The USS George Washington is expected to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Middle East. However, the deployment comes as around 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln have come under scrutiny following reports of dwindling supplies and deteriorating mental health among crew members who have not set foot on land since December.
Montgomery assessed that withdrawing the George Washington to the Middle East could also leave the US with only a limited naval presence in the Pacific for more than 1.5 years. After completing its mission in the Middle East, the carrier will have to return for a maintenance period.
This situation is a concern because the US Navy is increasingly burdened by the months-long conflict in the Middle East. At the same time, Washington is still required to prepare for a possible confrontation with China in the Indo-Pacific.
Meanwhile, Greg Poling, Director of the Southeast Asia Programme at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), said Beijing may actually view the situation as a strategic advantage.
‘(China) is quite pleased with the diversion of US attention and the frustration experienced by US allies and partners,’ he said.
The movement of the George Washington itself shows the carrier beginning to leave the Asian region. The US Navy stated that the ship passed through the Singapore Strait on Thursday, while a US official said the vessel then transited the Malacca Strait towards the Indian Ocean, the same route previously used by the USS Abraham Lincoln when deployed to the Middle East.
The Washington was known to be in Guam in mid-June, operating in the Philippine Sea in early July, and made a port visit to Da Nang, Vietnam, in late July.
