US Strikes Tehran, Iran Announces Closure of Strait of Hormuz

The Iranian government has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic for an indefinite period amid mounting tensions with the United States. In a statement posted on platform X on Thursday (11/6), the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) stated that the closure was enacted following an escalation triggered by US military actions and a recent announcement from the Iranian armed forces. “Due to the tensions triggered by aggressive American forces and the latest announcement by the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic, the Strait of Hormuz will be completely closed,” the PGSA declared. The authority also requested that parties who have obtained transit permits be patient and await further notice regarding the shipping lane’s operations. The announcement came a day after US President Donald Trump accused Iran of stalling negotiations and expressed an intention to launch a major attack on the country. On the same day, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced it had carried out strikes against Iran, which retaliated by attacking US military bases. This latest tension follows a conflict that erupted on 28 February, when the US and Israel launched attacks on several targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and killing civilians. Iran later responded by attacking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East. The two feuding nations had previously announced a ceasefire on 7 April. However, follow-up talks held in Islamabad failed to produce a breakthrough for resolving the conflict.
