US Strikes Southern Iran, Six Explosions Heard
American fighter jets struck several areas in southern Iran in the early hours of Wednesday (10/6), with explosions and projectile impacts reported at multiple locations in Hormozgan Province, according to Iranian media. The Tasnim news agency reported that the regions of Sirik, Qeshm Island, and Minab were targeted in the attack. At least six explosions were heard in the targeted areas, while Iranian state television confirmed that a projectile hit the town of Sirik. State media later confirmed that several projectiles also struck Qeshm Island, though the exact nature and impact of the strikes remain unclear. The state broadcaster also reported that air defence systems in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, and Sirik had been activated. Separately, the Mehr news agency reported four explosions at the port of Jask and another explosion on the outskirts of the city of Bandar Abbas in southern Iran. The development came after the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that US forces had begun launching strikes described as ‘self-defence’ actions against Iran. CENTCOM stated the operation was launched in response to the downing of a US Army Apache helicopter in a prior incident. The strikes caused damage to civilian infrastructure, including the destruction of a telecommunications tower. In financial fallout, the Indonesian rupiah closed weaker at 17,382 per US dollar on Friday (8/5) due to mounting geopolitical tensions following the US military strikes on Iran.
