US Strikes Iran: Telecommunications Tower and Water Tanks Destroyed
United States strikes on several areas in Iran on Tuesday (9/6) local time resulted in damage to civilian infrastructure, including the destruction of a telecommunications tower and two water storage tanks. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated the operation targeted a number of Iranian military facilities around the Strait of Hormuz, including air defence systems, command centres, and surveillance radar. According to CENTCOM, the strikes began around 5pm local time and were described as a proportional response to prior Iranian actions. CENTCOM emphasised the mission was a proportional response to Iranian aggression.
On the other side, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) condemned Washington’s actions and accused the United States of triggering an escalation of conflict in the region. In its statement, the IRGC said the US strikes hit several areas in southern Iran, including Jask, Sirik, and Qeshm Island. ‘The warmongering US regime attacked several points in Jask, Sirik, and Qeshm, damaging a telecommunications pole in Sirik and destroying two water tanks in the city,’ the IRGC statement said, as reported by AFP on Wednesday (10/6). The IRGC also claimed to have launched retaliatory strikes against American military assets in the Gulf region. ‘In response to the enemy’s cruel actions, IRGC Navy fighter aircraft launched a drone assault against the US 5th Fleet in Bahrain,’ the IRGC added.
The latest escalation between Tehran and Washington occurred after US President Donald Trump accused Iran of shooting down an American Apache combat helicopter conducting patrols in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump stated, however, that the two crew members of the helicopter survived the incident. The US military has recently deployed various combat assets to the area, including Apache helicopters, MQ-9 Reaper drones, and F/A-18 and F-35 fighter jets, to counter what it calls Iran’s attempt to restrict shipping access in the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Iran has claimed to have shot down approximately 30 American MQ-9 Reaper drones. Additionally, several US fighter jets have reportedly been lost due to enemy attacks since the conflict between the two countries erupted on 28 February.
