US Strikes Iran Again, Explosions Heard at Strait of Hormuz Port

The United States (US) has announced its latest strikes in the Strait of Hormuz region. The attack came after Iran fired missiles at several commercial ships transiting the strait. “This US strike is a response to Iran’s attack on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz and is intended to impose severe consequences for the act of targeting and attacking commercial shipping,” read a statement from US Central Command, as reported by AFP on Wednesday (8/7/2026). “The aggression demonstrated by Iran is unjustifiable, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire,” the statement added. The strikes occurred on Tuesday (7/7) evening local time. Iranian state media reported a series of explosions heard in several areas of the Strait of Hormuz following the announcement from the US military. The IRIB news agency reported six explosions heard on Iran’s Qeshm Island, seven explosions heard in the city of Sirik, and further blasts heard in the major port city of Bandar Abbas. The US and Iran are currently in a ceasefire situation after both agreed to end the war. Negotiations between the two countries are ongoing and have yet to reach a resolution. It is known that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reportedly fired at least two missiles at commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Monday (6/7) evening. As a result of the missile attack, two ships were reported to have sustained damage. Information regarding Iran’s latest attack in the Strait of Hormuz, as reported by Reuters on Tuesday (7/7), was disclosed by US media outlet Axios, citing two unnamed US officials. Authorities in Tehran have yet to issue an official statement. The Axios report stated that two commercial vessels, whose country of origin and owners were not named, suffered severe damage from the attack. There have been no reports of casualties so far. Meanwhile, according to a WSJ report, one of the ships attacked appeared to be the Al Rekayyat, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker owned and managed by Nakilat, or the Qatar Gas Transport Company. The WSJ reported that the ship was hit on the port side, directly above the engine room. “Fire in the engine room and full of smoke. Unable to assess further damage. All crew are safe and mustered on the starboard side,” the WSJ report stated. The WSJ report noted the ship was attacked while at the edge of the Strait of Hormuz, in the Gulf of Oman area. Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a tanker caught fire after being struck by an unidentified projectile in an incident in waters east of Limah, Oman, on Tuesday (7/7) local time. The UKMTO said the tanker was hit on the port side while sailing southwards, approximately 15 kilometres east of Limah, causing a fire. There were no reports of casualties or environmental impact from the incident.
