US sends amphibious assault ship and thousands of marines to Middle East
Washington — The Pentagon is deploying an amphibious assault ship and Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to the Middle East amid the ongoing conflict with Iran, according to reports from several US media outlets on Friday (13 March).
A US defence official told Fox News that the Pentagon is sending USS Tripoli, the Marine Amphibious Ready Group (MARG), and the 31st MEU to the Middle East with approximately 2,500 US marine personnel.
According to the reports, USS Tripoli, which is based in Japan, is expected to arrive within one to two weeks.
In addition to thousands of marines, the deployment will also add several warships and F-35 fighter jets to support forces already in the region, according to reporting from Axios citing statements from a senior US official.
The official stated that US Central Command (CENTCOM) requested the deployment of the new forces in order to have more options for military operations against Iran, the reports indicated, adding that the MEU can conduct ground operations if ordered.
US President Donald Trump told Fox News on Friday that the US military would escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz if necessary.
