US Senator Says Trump Has Lost the War Against Iran
A United States Senator, Chris Murphy, has openly criticised President Donald Trump, stating that Trump has lost the war against Iran. Murphy argued that the continuing battle is weakening the US while simultaneously strengthening Iran.
In his criticism, Murphy highlighted Trump’s inability to reach a permanent agreement to end the conflict with Iran. Diplomatic efforts to end the war have so far failed to produce concrete results. He stated that it is becoming increasingly clear that Trump will be forced to accept a “bad” deal in order to extract the US from the conflict.
“So, Donald Trump has lost this war,” said Murphy, a Democratic Senator for Connecticut, while speaking to the prominent US media outlet NBC. “America is becoming weaker. Iran is becoming stronger,” he added.
Murphy’s statement followed a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report that Trump is considering a step that essentially amounts to an admission of defeat regarding one of the key US military objectives: securing a deal to eliminate Iran’s remaining nuclear material and impose legal restrictions on Tehran’s future uranium enrichment and nuclear development capabilities. According to the WSJ, Trump has personally floated the idea to his staff of accepting a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz without resolving the nuclear issue.
In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press”, Murphy said he would even support a “bad deal” to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He noted that the cost of reopening the strategic waterway is rising as peace talks stall. According to reports, Iranian officials are demanding compensation, the lifting of sanctions, and a halt to US military operations.
“This war must end because every day it continues, America becomes weaker, Iran becomes stronger, and the American people are increasingly harmed by soaring prices,” Murphy stressed. He added that he would oppose funding to continue the war, but would support replenishing US ammunition stocks after the conflict ends.
