US Senator Calls Chinese Cars Cancer, Seeks Total Ban
NEW YORK, KOMPAS.com - Republican Party Senator Bernie Moreno plans to propose a new bill to tighten the ban on car manufacturers originating from China in the United States. Through this regulation, the US government aims to close the market to vehicles with any connection to China, whether in terms of components, software, or business partnerships. He emphasised that the rule is designed to prevent Chinese-made cars from entering the American market. “There will never be a scenario where Chinese cars enter our market,” Moreno said, quoted from Carnewschina, Friday (3/4/2026). If passed, this regulation will be stricter than the policy already in place since January 2025 during President Joe Biden’s era. To explain his stance, Moreno compared the automotive industry to the telecommunications sector. He referenced the US ban on Chinese technology company Huawei. “We do not allow Huawei into our telecommunications infrastructure. We will also not allow Chinese car manufacturers into this market,” he said. He hopes that regions in Latin America, Mexico, Canada, and Europe will implement similar policies. On the other hand, this plan has received support from the US automotive industry. Several associations have even urged the government to continue restricting Chinese cars to protect the local market.
