International relations expert Teuku Rezasyah believes the United States Senate resolution calling on President Donald Trump to halt the military campaign against Iran or seek Congressional approval before further action could push Washington to soften its stance towards Tehran. According to him, the Senate’s move reflects a realistic calculation amid the rising political and military costs of a prolonged conflict. Rezasyah said the Senate’s decision indicates a shift in how Washington reads global geopolitical dynamics. He assessed that the US’s ability to maintain pressure on Iran is no longer as strong as before. “The US Senate is very realistic. Because US energy reserves are only enough for the next four weeks, and a war against Iran can no longer be won,” Teuku Rezasyah told Media Indonesia on 24 June 2026. According to Rezasyah, the US position is also influenced by an international situation that is not entirely favourable to Washington. He cited several external factors that have weakened US leverage over Tehran. “The lack of support from NATO allies, the declining global reputation of the US, and the strengthening Iran-Russia-China coalition have weakened the US’s ability to pressure Iran,” he stated. On the other hand, Rezasyah assessed that Iran is now in a relatively stronger position. This, according to him, is evident from Iran’s domestic consolidation and its increasingly respected military capabilities. “Meanwhile, Iran, which is increasingly united domestically, with its highly targeted and measured missiles, has put Iranian diplomacy in a commanding position,” he said. Rezasyah noted that these developments could potentially open up greater diplomatic space between Washington and Tehran. Moreover, the two countries are reportedly undergoing a negotiation process to resolve various strategic issues that have been sources of tension. Regarding the impact of the Senate resolution on Trump’s room for manoeuvre in making military decisions, Rezasyah predicted that US policy towards Iran will move in a more moderate direction. “It is expected that the US will soften towards Iran, but will force International Law to pressure Iran on the Nuclear and Strait of Hormuz aspects, albeit psychologically,” he explained. He assessed that the resolution could also increase political pressure on Trump, especially in determining the direction of US foreign policy and national security. “The Senate resolution will corner President Donald Trump. The US military decision is to declare victory in the war, even if symbolically, while Iran will restrain itself from claiming to have won the war against the US,” Rezasyah concluded.
