US Seizes $1 Billion in Iranian Crypto Assets
Hamilton, Canada (ANTARA) - US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the seizure of Iranian cryptocurrency assets worth up to $1 billion and coordination with European allies to confiscate other assets linked to Tehran.
“I am confident we have seized approximately $1 billion in their cryptocurrency,” Bessent said on Friday, adding that the US had “taken their wallet directly.”
He also noted that some asset holders were unaware their assets had been seized. “Some of them may still be typing right now, unaware that their wallets have been taken,” he said.
The US Treasury Secretary stated that they are continuing to coordinate with allies for broader asset seizures.
“We are working with allies across Europe to seize villas, homes, and properties,” Bessent said, claiming the move aims to recover funds stolen from the Iranian people.
“The assets originated from money stolen from the Iranian people,” he added.
Bessent also mentioned that Iran’s oil export facilities on Kharg Island have been rendered inoperable due to a US naval blockade.
He added that Iran’s attacks on Gulf states have backfired diplomatically, turning them into “very good partners” in financial efforts to counter Tehran.
Therefore, the US can freeze Iranian bank accounts in the region, Bessent said.
