US Secretly Escorted 100 Million Barrels of Oil Through Strait of Hormuz
President Donald Trump has disclosed that the United States military secretly carried out a special operation to escort oil tankers and commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz. According to Trump, the covert mission successfully facilitated the entry of more than 100 million barrels of oil into the global market.
In a statement via his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, US time, Trump said he ordered the military operation last month as the security situation in the Strait of Hormuz deteriorated. “Last month I instructed the great United States military to carry out a secret mission to support oil tankers and other commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump stated.
Trump claimed the operation enabled more than 200 commercial ships to pass safely, ensuring the continued flow of global energy supplies despite the precarious conditions in the Gulf region. “Today I am pleased to announce that this effort has resulted in over 100 million barrels of oil successfully passing through the Strait of Hormuz and into the open market,” he added.
The US government had previously launched a military operation named Project Freedom in early May to escort ships through the strategic passage. The mission was halted just a day after it began as part of efforts to de-escalate conflict in the Middle East. However, American media later reported that the escorts had resumed, even as US Central Command (CENTCOM) denied that the Navy was again assisting commercial vessels in the area.
Trump’s admission came as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz escalated sharply. Iran subsequently announced the closure of the waterway and threatened to attack any ship attempting to pass. Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya military command declared that any vessel in the Strait of Hormuz would be considered a target, and Tehran claimed it had already struck two ships attempting to transit the area.
