US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed optimism that news regarding a peace agreement with Iran could be announced imminently. “There may be some news later today. There may not be. I hope there will be,” Rubio told journalists during a visit to New Delhi, India, on Saturday, 23 May 2026.

Rubio’s statement emerged as Pakistan’s influential military chief arrived in Tehran to reinforce mediation efforts, and US President Donald Trump unexpectedly cancelled his attendance at his son’s wedding to remain in Washington. These two developments have sparked speculation that talks have reached a sensitive juncture.

Rubio acknowledged positive progress in peace agreement negotiations with Iran, suggesting that a deal between the two nations could be finalised imminently. “There has been some progress that has been achieved. Even as I speak to you now, some work is being done,” he said.

“There is a possibility that, whether it is later today, tomorrow, or in a few days, we may have something to report,” Rubio added.

Rubio reiterated US demands that Iran fully open the Strait of Hormuz, which had been controlled by Iran in response to US-Israeli attacks. The US has also demanded that Iran surrender highly enriched uranium.

“Trump’s preference has always been to resolve such matters through negotiated diplomatic solutions. That is what we are currently working on,” Rubio stated.
