US Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer has announced her resignation from her position, after being embroiled in a series of scandals, including complaints regarding inappropriate treatment of young female staff members. Chavez-DeRemer’s departure from President Donald Trump’s administration, as reported by AFP on Tuesday (21/4/2026), ends speculation that had been building over recent weeks about the fate of her position. This resignation comes in the wake of the dismissal of US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and US Attorney General Pam Bondi, marking the successive exits of several high-ranking female officials from Trump’s cabinet in recent weeks. “Although my tenure in the administration has ended, that does not mean I will stop fighting for American workers,” Chavez-DeRemer wrote in a statement on social media platform X. She added that she will return to the private sector. Chavez-DeRemer announced her resignation after recently facing calls to step down over allegations that she, her aides, and even family members routinely sent private messages and a series of requests to young staff at the US Department of Labor. The New York Times (NYT) reported last week that Chavez-DeRemer and her former deputy chief of staff sent text messages asking several employees to bring them wine during official departmental trips. Chavez-DeRemer’s husband and father, according to the NYT report, also exchanged text messages with several young female staff members, some of whom were instructed by Chavez-DeRemer to “pay attention” to the men. Those text messages were collected as part of an investigation into Chavez-DeRemer’s leadership, which was launched in response to complaints about widespread behavioural violations that raised concerns among staff. The NYT reported that four individuals had been forced out of Chavez-DeRemer’s team as a result of the investigation, including her former chief of staff and former deputy chief of staff, as well as the director of preparation and a member of her security team who was accused of having an affair with her. At least three members of the US Department of Labor staff have filed civil rights violation complaints describing a hostile work environment. Chavez-DeRemer has not yet been personally accused of violations in the case involving her father and husband. However, a report by MS NOW media outlet stated that two complaints by young female staff accused Chavez-DeRemer’s husband, Shawn DeRemer, of sexual harassment. Chavez-DeRemer has not commented directly on the scandal that has ensnared her.
