US Reportedly Considering Major Military Operation to Seize Iran's Enriched Uranium

Moscow (ANTARA) - The United States is considering the possibility of a major operation, involving thousands of military personnel, to seize enriched uranium stockpiles from Iran’s nuclear facilities, according to a report by The New York Post on Saturday (25 July).

“I hate to say it, but I think the best way to get rid of Iran’s nuclear material, at least with what they currently possess, is through a military operation, because negotiations are at a dead end,” a military source told the American conservative newspaper.

The operation would involve thousands of ground personnel storming Iran’s nuclear facilities to neutralise booby traps, deploy technical teams, and establish defensive lines around their target locations.

A small team of special forces would then directly take possession of the uranium on site. According to the report, that phase would be the most dangerous part of the entire military offensive.

In addition, the US would need full control of the air traffic corridor so that its military aircraft could land at a safe location to carry out the operation.

Previously, on Thursday (23 July), sources from the Iranian military said their armed forces had conducted training for a number of scenarios involving US military attacks and were preparing to face a US ground invasion.

On 18 June, the US and Iran signed a peace memorandum to halt the conflict that had erupted on 28 February. However, US forces resumed attacks on Iran starting 8 July.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed the attacks were carried out in retaliation for Iran’s actions against commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian forces responded to the US attacks by launching counter-strikes against US military bases in the Middle East.

President Trump subsequently stated that the ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran was no longer in effect.
