US Reportedly Considering Ban on Pregnant Women Entering the Country

The United States authorities are considering banning pregnant women from entering the country to prevent ‘birth tourism’, according to a report by The Telegraph on Thursday. The move comes after the US Supreme Court on Tuesday blocked President Donald Trump’s order that sought to revoke birthright citizenship for all babies born on US soil. Trump described the ruling as a ‘great victory’ for China, while urging Congress to draft legislation that would abolish birthright citizenship. The White House is said to firmly believe that ‘birth tourism’ is a national security threat. They assess that children born in the US to foreign parents could steal American intellectual property upon returning to their home countries after studying at US universities. The report states that between 20,000 and 26,000 babies are born to foreign nationals in the US each year. After beginning his second term, Trump issued an executive order limiting citizenship for individuals born in the US. Trump argues that the citizenship clause under the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution should be limited to children born to parents who are lawful and permanent residents.
