US Proposes UN Resolution on Strait of Hormuz, Iran Furious!
The Iranian government has strongly condemned the latest efforts by the United States (US) to pass a draft resolution in the United Nations (UN) Security Council regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran described Washington’s proposed draft as a blatant attempt to distort facts and protect the aggressors.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, as reported by Press TV on Tuesday (12/5/2026), stated that the US, along with some of its regional allies, is once again trying to “change the perspective on the issue”.
Gharibabadi assessed that the US-proposed resolution draft seeks to transform the consequences of military aggression and illegal sieges into accusations against Iran, which he claims has been the victim of threats, pressure, and direct attacks.
“Freedom of navigation is a respected principle of law, but it cannot be interpreted selectively, politically, and detached from the United Nations Charter,” Gharibabadi said in a statement via social media platform X on Monday (11/5) evening.
Furthermore, Gharibabadi emphasised that any genuine initiative regarding maritime security in the region cannot ignore the repeated use of violence, the imposition of sea blockades, ongoing threats, and the direct role played by the US and Israel in creating the crisis, while pretending to act neutrally or possessing legal credibility.
Gharibabadi clarified that the core issue is not about ship passages “in a vacuum”, but rather certain governments attempting to reframe the outcomes of their illegal actions using language referred to as the “international order”.
“Such an approach does not contribute to de-escalation, maritime security, or the credibility of multilateral mechanisms,” he warned.
Gharibabadi concluded that any text attempting to depict the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, without explicitly addressing aggression, sieges, threats of violence, and Iran’s legitimate right to defend its security and national interests, “will be flawed, biased, political, and certainly doomed to fail from the outset”.
Gharibabadi’s statement came after the US held closed-door talks with several Gulf countries last week to promote its proposed resolution draft.
The US-proposed resolution draft demands that Iran immediately cease what it calls “attacks” in the Strait of Hormuz and threatens Tehran with new sanctions, or even possible authorisation for the use of force if it refuses to comply.
