US Prioritises Iran, Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks Neglected

Moscow (ANTARA) - The government of US President Donald Trump is reportedly now prioritising the Iran conflict, meaning discussions related to Russia-Ukraine negotiations are no longer the main focus. According to a Politico report citing senior US officials, officials even no longer recall when the Russia-Ukraine negotiations issue was last discussed at the government level. “Iran has clearly become the main focus,” said a senior White House official. The report states that US presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who were the main negotiators in resolving the Ukraine conflict, are now handling Iran issues more extensively. Nevertheless, communication with Russian and Ukrainian parties continues, albeit on a limited scale. In addition, Trump’s interest in cooperating with NATO allies on the Ukraine issue is reportedly declining, in line with Washington’s dissatisfaction with European countries that do not support US actions towards Iran. However, another White House official reminded that this does not mean Trump will completely abandon Russia-Ukraine peace efforts. “Just because it’s not the main focus right now doesn’t mean it’s no longer an important priority,” he said. Since the beginning of the year, delegations from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States have held three rounds of negotiations. The last meeting took place in Geneva on 17-18 February.
