US prepares UN resolution to protect navigation in Strait of Hormuz
Washington (ANTARA) - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday (5/5) that the US Mission to the United Nations (UN) is preparing a resolution to protect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
“Under President Trump’s direction, the US, together with Bahrain and our Gulf partners Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar, is drafting a UN Security Council Resolution to defend freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” according to a US State Department press statement.
The draft resolution urges Iran to stop attacks, alleged mine-laying in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as fee collections, and also requires Iran to disclose the locations of sea mines, the statement added.
Washington hopes the resolution will be decided soon in the coming days after consultations with other UN Security Council members.
At the end of April, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth declined to comment on when the US military would complete efforts to clear mines in the Strait of Hormuz that are suspected to have been planted in the area.
President Trump stated that he has ordered the United States Navy to triple mine-clearing activities in the strait and to shoot any Iranian vessel suspected of planting mines in the waterway.
