US prepares larger-scale attack on Iran

Washington (ANTARA) - The United States is preparing to carry out a large-scale military attack on Iran, increasing its military presence in the Middle East, according to a report in The Washington Post citing a US official.

According to a Wall Street Journal report on Sunday (19 July), the US is again deploying fighter aircraft and additional tanker aircraft from Europe to the Middle East.

“The US is planning a wider war,” said a US official familiar with internal discussions within the Trump administration.

However, the US’s ability to conduct large-scale military action is limited by dwindling ammunition supplies, according to the newspaper’s sources.

The US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on 18 June to end a conflict that had been running since 28 February.

However, Washington launched fresh attacks on Iran on 8 July, citing a response to Iran’s actions against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran said the attacks violated the agreement and launched retaliatory strikes on US military bases in the Middle East.
