US Panics, Prepares New Tactics to Cripple China

The United States is preparing new tactics to cripple China’s dominance in artificial intelligence. The latest move could see Washington ban the use of AI models from Beijing within American companies.

This time, the target is open-source AI models originating from China, which are reportedly already widely used by US firms. According to a report by Axios citing a source, the US Department of Commerce is considering adding several Chinese AI laboratories to an ‘Entity List’ that would restrict their access. This would prevent Chinese AI models from being sold to the US without a license.

Simultaneously, the White House National Security Agency and the Office of the National Cyber Director are considering issuing a warning regarding the threats posed by Chinese AI laboratories. Beyond a formal ban, another tactic being explored involves highlighting potential security vulnerabilities and the lack of security in Chinese models, as well as the governance issues they raise.

Neither the White House nor the Department of Commerce responded to requests for comment on the matter.
