US Military Suddenly Deploys Troops and Fleet to North Sulawesi, What is Happening?

The United States Air Force has suddenly deployed its military fleet and personnel to Sam Ratulangi Air Base in Manado, North Sulawesi. The presence of this military fleet aims to collaborate with the Indonesian National Armed Forces Air Force (TNI-AU) in a joint field exercise titled Cope West 2026.

In a press statement from the US Embassy in Jakarta, the exercise, which focuses entirely on tactical airlift operations, is scheduled to take place from 7 to 11 September. Personnel and aircraft from the 374th Airlift Wing of the US Air Force will train directly alongside TNI-AU personnel in the field. This military manoeuvre is also confirmed to involve the flagship transport aircraft from both nations, namely the C-130.

The Cope West 2026 activity is focused on tactical air operation training to increase interoperability with TNI-AU tactical airlift assets, while simultaneously supporting Indonesia’s military modernisation programme. US and Indonesian forces are scheduled to carry out intensive joint tactical air operations in the skies of Sulawesi. The US Embassy detailed a series of high-risk manoeuvres that both air forces will perform.

“Including Low-Cost Low-Altitude (LCLA) cargo drops, high-speed and low-speed container delivery systems, personnel jumps using military freefall techniques, and tactical formation flying,” the official US Embassy release stated.

In addition to practising combat manoeuvres in the air, this event will also serve as a platform for the exchange of strategic expertise between the militaries of both nations. This pertains to several fields, such as a focus on emergency handling.

“Experts from both countries will also share knowledge and experience in various fields, such as flight medicine, aeromedical evacuation, and emergency handling procedures. Furthermore, table-top simulation exercises will be conducted to improve coordination and joint capabilities,” it added.

This deployment of strength is part of the Pacific Air Forces manoeuvre, which coordinates directly with various components, allies, and global partners. This strategic move aims to provide air, space, and cyber capabilities to support the US Indo-Pacific Command and maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

For information, Cope West is a military exercise that has been held periodically since it was first conducted in 1989. This year’s joint exercise specifically marks the 13th execution of Cope West within the Indonesian territory.
